Abstract
Far from the roll in the hay that people expect of Shakespearean comedies, this Taming of the Shrew will draw attention to cycles of violence, manipulation and nepotism that still exist in so many homes across Australia. It may not be the Shrew we deserve, but it's the one we need right now. Five suitors compete for the hand (and love) of the two Minola sisters. One is a vision of beauty and modesty, the other a fiery shrew. Both are filthy rich. The suitors pull out all the stops to win over the stoic Mother-in-Law and get the girl: flattery, disguises, bribes, even a bit of violence, psychological torture an...d starvation. Who will come out on top? Who's laughing now? A new adaptation of The Taming of the Shrew, which interrogates the power hierarchies of domestic relationships, fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, husbands and wives, alpha and beta.
