Abstract The play was transposed to Victorian England in which the unreality of the old royal court becomes a parlor setting with politicians as role-players versus the dirty streets Richard inhabits…”the struggle between reality and its facade, the eloquent, the inadequate and the intolerably uncouth.” The funding application described it as a “Mannerist production” and used music from Stanford, Chopin and “Gothic chanting”.
