Abstract
The banished daughter of a banished father, Rosalind flees the court of her usurping uncle. Disguising herself, and accompanied by her cousin Celia and Touchstone the fool, she escapes to the Forest of Arden. Thus begins a series of encounters with Arden's diverse inhabitants, all of whom hold very different views on life, love and the forest itself. One of Shakespeare's best loved comedies, AS YOU LIKE IT, presented by the Melbourne University Shakespeare Company, wryly exploits and exposes a number of romantic conventions. The Forest of Arden rapidly becomes a complicated backdrop against which Shakespeare poses important questions about love, gender, genre, and performance. "...And all the men and women merely players..."
